According to a recent article in Al.com, Alabama has the 6th worst drivers in the country.  See the photo above.  Of course, this is somewhat of a subjective test and based upon selective criteria.  In this article, the statistics were derived from “the percentage of insured drivers; DUI arrests per 1,000 drivers; vehicular related deaths per 1,000 drivers; and Google trends on the automobile ticket-related topics”.

In Alabama, only 1.42 DUI arrests were made per thousand drivers. However, 33% of deaths in Alabama resulted from a driver being over the legal alcohol limit.  Of course, it’s possible our law enforcement personnel are limited and not making enough arrests.

In light of the above, and as our attorneys at Lewis, Feldman & Lehane, LLC are constantly preaching, uninsured motorist coverage is a very necessary protection which drivers should purchase for their auto insurance.  It is usually one of the least expensive purchases with the most protection.  Why?  Many of these DUI drivers are uninsured.  If they have no insurance and they were drinking at a private residence, your only option for compensation is through your own uninsured motorist coverage.

CALL YOUR AGENT!!! Check your coverages.  If your uninsured motorist coverage is $25,000.00, ask your agent what the cost would be to increase it to $100,000.00 or more.  If you are ever in a wreck, you will be glad you did.
