Takata Airbag Recall Expands

Takata continues to expand the recall of its airbags.  Here are the current manufacturers with recalls:

Acura Audi BMW Buick Cadillac Chevrolet Chrysler Daimler Dodge/Ram Ferrari Ford GMC Honda Infiniti Jaguar Jeep Land Rover Lexus Lincoln Mazda Mercedes-Benz Mercury Mitsubishi Nissan Pontiac Saab Saturn Scion Subaru Toyota Volkswagen

That’s a lot of recalls, and a lot of potential problems. Car & Driver Magazine has written an “all you need to know” article about the Takata issue which you can read here.

Obviously, no company such as Takata wants to have a defective product and have to recall millions in order to spend more money in order to fix the issue.  But, when a company puts a product on the market and profits by putting it in the stream of commerce, that company must stand behind its product – in this case an airbag.

The problem here is that so many are being utilized daily that there are more airbags out there than Takata has to fix them.  So, people are driving around in vehicles which could cause “serious injury or death.” (Quote from the Ford recall notice).  What’s worse is that Takata has allegedly known about this problem for 8 years.

At Lewis, Feldman & Lehane, LLC, we have handled product defect cases through the years.  In Alabama, that involves understanding the Alabama Extended Manufacturer’s Liability Doctrine (“AEMLD”).  If these airbags continue to cause problems, the AEMLD will be a necessary component for redressing the wrongs.
