According to a Social Security Administration press release, Vice President Joe Biden and Michael J. Astrue, Commissioner of Social Security, recently announced that the federal government will send out $250 economic recovery payments to people who receive Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits beginning in early May 2009 and continuing throughout the month. No action is required to get the payment, which will be sent separately from the person’s regular monthly payment. Read the article: http://www.ssa.gov/pressoffice/pr/recovery-payments-pr.htm
If you are not familiar with SSI, these benefits are for people who have not earned enough work credits to qualify for Disability benefits based on their earnings. This is a needs-based program, meaning that your income and resources must be very limited in order for you to qualify. There are times when a person is eligible to draw both Disability and SSI, so you should always apply for both. If the disabled person is a child, the parents’ income and resources will be deemed to be available to the child.
