In the last two articles, I spoke about the importance of nutrition and exercise when healing from an automobile accident. I have discovered that in my 18 years of practice that the topic I am writing about today has the most important role of the three – reducing emotional stress.

Handling emotional stress plays a crucial role in any form of healing. It is so important to fuel your subconcious with positive feedback and to have an optimistic view toward life in order to help your body heal. The following are some tips that I give to my patients to help them through their injuries:

1. Do not watch the evening news – it is usually negative, violent and not helpful to watch before going to sleep.

2. Avoid shows that are depressing or negative before going to bed. If you are to watch anything, watch a comedy or a favorite movie.

3. Start a journal – each night write in your journal the 5 best things that happened that day. It will remind you how blessed your life is.

4. Volunteer – studies show that the 2 keys to longevity are getting enough sleep and helping out others. Become a big brother/sisiter, tutor, help out at your local church/synagogue. It will take your mind off your troubles.

5. Make sure you are sleeping well – drink camomile tea, warm milk, take a warm bath – these things can help you get the sleep that you need to help your body heal.

6. Stretch before bed – do 10-15 minutes of stretching. If you are sore, ice the sore areas for 10 minutes after stretching.

7. Play a board game with your family. Or take a walk, or sit at the table and talk. Shut the tv off and spend some quality time with your family.

8. Read something inspirational and/or spiritual – stay away from trash novels.

These are just some examples of things that you can do to help reduce the emotional stress from an automobile accident to help heal the physical body.
